Geography
South Africa is a beautiful country on the southern tip of Africa. It borders Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. South Africa is 1.2 million square miles. This makes the size comparable to one-eighth the size of the United States, or twice the size of France. It has more than 1500 miles of low-lying coastline on the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean.
There are three geographic regions of South Africa: the African Plateau, Great Escarpment, and the coastal plains. The African Plateau is in the interior part of the country. Part of it forms the Kalahari Desert Basin. This region is not very populated. The terrain in the Great Escarpment varies, but a lot of it is mountainous. The coastal plains border the entire country of South Africa. They are very fertile, narrow valleys of land.
